On Friday, 05 September 2025, insolvency lawyer Bouwer van Niekerk was fatally shot in broad daylight inside the boardroom of his Saxonwold, Johannesburg office, an attack police have described as a “deliberate hit.” Nothing was stolen, reinforcing suspicions that this was a targeted assassination linked to his legal work.
Van Niekerk was reportedly handling several high-profile matters, including a Ponzi-scheme-related insolvency case. Days before his death, he allegedly received threats warning him to withdraw from one of his cases or face dire consequences.
The brazen killing has sent shockwaves through South Africa’s legal community, raising alarm over the safety of professionals confronting corruption and organised crime.
The Minister of Justice has called for an expedited investigation, noting that Van Niekerk’s assassination coincided with another fatal shooting outside the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on the same day. Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi condemned what she described as “senseless violence” against legal professionals.
These killings form part of a deeply troubling pattern of attacks on individuals upholding justice. In July 2025, prosecutor Tracy Brown of the New Brighton Regional Court was gunned down outside her home in Gqeberha. In April 2025, another prosecutor, Elona Sombulula, was murdered in Ngcobo.
The legal fraternity also recalls the tragic 2023 assassination of Cloete and Thomas Murray, Bosasa liquidators shot dead on the M1 highway.
The South African Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners Association (SARIPA) expressed deep shock and outrage at Van Niekerk’s murder, with chairperson Jo Mitchell-Marais describing it as an assault on the judicial system. “Our members must work without fear or violence,” she said.
Advocates for Transformation (AFT) also condemned the attack, calling it an “intolerable assault” on the rule of law and the administration of justice. The organisation has vowed to petition relevant authorities to classify targeted attacks on legal professionals as priority crimes, establish a dedicated multi-agency task team to investigate and prosecute such cases, and urgently engage with the profession to develop a coordinated protection strategy.
