Court Online, South Africa’s electronic filing, case management, and evidence management system for the High Courts, is now being rolled out across the country following its initial pilot phase in Gauteng.
This end-to-end digital platform enables legal practitioners to file documentation electronically online anywhere and anytime without being physically present at court. It also affords legal practitioners the ease of managing their court appearance diaries and court evidence instantly online.
By allowing litigants to submit documentation electronically, the system aims to reduce delays and enhance access to justice through digital efficiency.
Following the “successful” piloting in the Gauteng High Court, Court Online is now being rolled out in different divisions across the country.
Labour Court and Labour Appeal Court
The Labour Court issued a directive making Court Online fully operational for all cases from 14 April 2025 in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Gqeberha. This follows an earlier phased implementation, where initially only urgent applications could be initiated through the system.
This shift is particularly significant for the labour courts, which are notorious for paper-heavy caseloads and administrative issues (i.e missing files). Court Online is expected to mitigate file loss and storage issues by securing documents in the cloud.
Western Cape
A phased approach was adopted in implementing Court Online in the Western Cape Division which started in December 2024. Full integration has been gradually expanding since then.
KwaZulu-Natal
The KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court began using Court Online from 1 April 2025, marking another significant milestone in the national rollout.
Limpopo
In Limpopo, Court Online has been fully adopted for all new cases initiated from 6 May 2025, as part of a phased provincial implementation.
Mpumulanga
The Mpumalanga Division went live with Court Online on 21 May 2025 in Mbombela and 23 May 2025 in Middleburg.
As more High Court divisions go digital and ongoing technical improvements are introduced, Court Online is set to reshape the judicial landscape by offering a faster, more reliable, and more accessible way for litigants and legal professionals to interact with the courts.
