Africa’s legal profession celebrated a landmark moment last week as the inaugural Legal Innovation & Impact Awards recognised the individuals, law firms and organisations leading innovation and transformation across the continent.
Held on 25 June 2026 as part of the Legal Innovation Summit in Johannesburg, the awards were established to celebrate legal professionals who are reimagining the delivery of legal services through technology, leadership and new ways of working. The ceremony formed part of a two-day summit focused on artificial intelligence, legal operations, innovation and the future of the African legal profession.
The winners across the various categories showcased the breadth of innovation taking place in law firms, corporate legal departments, legal operations and the growing legal technology ecosystem.
In the Transformative Legal Leaders (Law Firm) category, Aalia Manie was named the winner, with Dominic Rebelo recognised as the runner-up.
In the Transformative Legal Leaders category, Dr Jackie Nagtegaal took top honours, while Patience Mapoko was named runner-up and Annabelle Thomas received a Highly Commended award.
The SMMEs & Legal Tech Startups category celebrated Africa’s growing legal technology sector, with Laws.Africa winning the award and Anvaya Legal AI finishing as runner-up.
The Next Generation Legal Leader (Law Firm) award went to Michael Odo, while Francis Makkink was recognised as runner-up.
In the Next Generation Legal Leader category, Sherilyn Shale Naidoo was named the winner, with Blandes Emmanuel taking the runner-up position.
The Legal Operations Excellence award was presented to Dr Ruth Gondwe, with Altron Group Legal recognised as runner-up for its contribution to advancing legal operations.
The Law Firm Innovation award was won by Paul Mukiibi, while the Deneys Shipping and Transport Team received the runner-up award.
In the In-House Legal Trailblazers category, Andréa Campbell was named the winner. Brownie Ebal was recognised as runner-up, while Lesaka Technologies Inc. received a Highly Commended award.
The inaugural awards highlight the increasing importance of innovation as legal professionals respond to rapid advances in artificial intelligence, legal technology and evolving client expectations. Rather than focusing solely on traditional measures of legal excellence, the awards recognise individuals and organisations creating measurable impact through new ways of delivering legal services, embracing technology and transforming legal practice.
