Webber Wentzel and Bowmans have played a pivotal role in advising on one of the most significant mergers in the global mining sector and the second largest M&A transaction in South African history.

The firms advised Anglo American plc and Teck Resources Limited on their agreement to merge, creating Anglo Teck plc – a global critical minerals champion and one of the world’s top five copper producers. Valued at USD 65 billion (with an implied pro forma enterprise value of USD 69 billion, approximately ZAR 1.2 trillion), the transaction represents a landmark moment for the mining industry.

The merger brings together world-class operations in copper, zinc, iron ore, and crop nutrients, forming a powerful platform for growth and resilience in the energy transition. Anglo Teck will be headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, with corporate offices in London and Johannesburg, and will have listings on the LSE, JSE, TSX, and NYSE.

This transaction is undertaken in collaboration with some of the world’s leading law firms, including Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz (New York), Stikeman Elliott LLP (Toronto), and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (London).

The Webber Wentzel team advising Anglo American is led by senior partner Christo Els, while Bowmans represents Teck Resources Limited under the leadership of chairman and senior partner Ezra Davids.

This landmark deal underscores the depth of South African legal expertise on the global stage.
