The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) has announced the appointment of Mpumelelo Nconco as its new Director, marking aleadership transition for one of South Africa’s most critical labour institutions. His appointment is set to take effect on 1 April 2026, in terms of section 118 of the Labour Relations Act.

Nconco succeeds Cameron Morajane, who previously led the institution during a period characterised by increasing caseloads and evolving workplace disputes.  His appointment signals both continuity and the potential for reform within the CCMA, particularly as the institution continues to grapple with backlogs, procedural efficiency and the changing nature of employment relationships.

Prior to his appointment, Nconco held a senior leadership role within the CCMA as Provincial Senior Commissioner in Gauteng, positioning him as an insider with deep institutional knowledge.

The CCMA, established in terms of the Labour Relations Act of 1995, plays a central role in South Africa’s labour dispute resolution framework. It provides accessible and cost-effective services to both employers and employees, including conciliation, mediation, and arbitration. Over the years, it has become a cornerstone of workplace dispute resolution, handling millions of cases and reducing pressure on the Labour Court.

From a governance perspective, the role of CCMA Director is pivotal. The Director is responsible for the overall administration of the institution, strategic leadership and ensuring that the CCMA fulfils its statutory mandate effectively. This includes overseeing commissioners, managing resources, and maintaining the integrity and independence of the dispute resolution process.
