In a significant shift for the South African legal landscape, Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa has officially transitioned into an independent firm, now trading as Deneys. The change, effective 31 March 2026, marks the end of a more than decade-long association with the global Norton Rose Fulbright network.
The separation was first announced in November 2025, when it was confirmed that the South African arm of Norton Rose Fulbright would exit the global verein structure and operate independently. This move forms part of a broader trend of international law firms reassessing their presence in South Africa, driven by evolving client needs and shifting global market dynamics.
The choice of the name Deneys draws from Deneys Reitz Inc, one of South Africa’s historic “Big Five” law firms prior to its 2011 merger with Norton Rose.
Despite the rebrand and structural shift, much remains unchanged. The firm retains its offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, along with its team of over 120 lawyers and established client base.
CEO Brent Botha, who previously led Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa, continues to head the newly independent firm.
Importantly, Deneys is expected to maintain strong international relationships, continuing to service cross-border clients and collaborate with global firms where necessary.
